Approaching the island from Split on the ferry gives you the perfect start to your WearActive adventure. Vis Island lies between Italy and Croatia, about 25 miles southwest of Split. At only 56
square miles in size, Vis is the furthest inhabited island from the Croatian coast. It has a hidden harbour that upon arrival reveals wonderful Dalmation stone houses, churches and evidence of a
Its strategic westerly location made it an ideal military base. The Yugoslavian army, in 1992 left the island, leaving behind lush vegetation, pristine coastline and its preserved traditional
lifestyle. As well as natural beauty, what became apparent to us immediately was that Vis is a place full of history. Vis town from end to end is only a thirty minute walk. While walking, you
will pass Renaissance and early Baroque architecture, churches and towers. Vis town is the oldest settlement on the island. As well as villas and churches dating from 16th and 17th century you
can find interesting ruins from the Greek and Roman period. Vis town also has a host of excellent restaurants offering local island dishes and tastings of its famous Plavac Mali and Vugava wines.
On the western coast of the island is the timeless fishing village of Komiza. Nestled at the foot of Mount Hum, Komiza is a town of limestone houses, narrow streets and a pretty harbour. Komiza
is the perfect great base to take a speedboat trip to the island of Bisevo, which is famous for its blue grotto.
There are some beautiful beaches and coves on the island, especially on the Southern coast. This is where our village of Rukavac is situated. In our village we have a few beaches 10 mins walking
distance, the sea a 5 minute walk and a few beach bars close for a cheeky afternoon cold beer! To get to our village from the ferry in Vis town you will pass cultivated terraces of grape vines
and olive groves. Virtually every Vis Island family is involved in growing grapes and making their own wine. September is generally a month of grape picking and pressing. The smell of fermenting
grapes is everywhere, wonderful when you are cycling through the island.
For active tourism Vis island is perfect. When we first arrived to the island we only had a kayak and a bike. We have been exploring ever since. Each activity allows you to appreciate the island
differently. When we hike you can sense the rich vegetation, when we kayak we are constantly finding new caves and places to climb and jump into the sea.
Our house is a typical Croatian stone house. We are situated on the South side of Vis island in Rukavac old town. Our part of the village was a small settlement of five homes built by brothers in
the early 1900's. At that time our house was a single story dwelling. During World War II it became a meeting place for the 'partisans'. Later, a second story was added and the ground floor was
used to press and store wine. We renovated the property with the help of a local builder, Braco, who is also something of a local hero (certainly to us). Now its our home and a place that we love
to share with guests, family and friends.
We are part of a village community that's only a 5 minute walk from the magnificent Srebrena beach and a 20 minute paddle to the Green cave on the island of Ravnik. We think it's the perfect
holiday location as we have also found it a perfect home!
Our place offers much more than the usual 'holiday apartment'. Each of the 4 bedrooms are simply and stylishly decorated, all have AC units, hairdryers, and private bathrooms. Our bedrooms are
not huge spaces but they are ideal for a great nights sleep after a day of exploring. The middle floor of the house is a shared space, an open plan room with comfy leather sofas, wifi and a place
to make a cup of tea and keep the beers cold. From the middle floor you can also access the balcony. The balcony is the perfect place to relax in the late afternoon with a good book and a glass
of wine. The balcony is also where we serve the evening meal.
We have no TV, but we do have plenty of games to entertain younger guests and a huge collection of DVD's for the very rare times they are required.
The region of East Tyrol offer countless possibilities for anyone who
wants to immerse themselves within the Austrian mountains. It has been less invaded than its close Tyrolean neighbours of Kitzbuhel and Kaprun, retaining it's farming areas and rich
Austrian traditions. The regions best feature is its nature. From our base at MoaAlm we are surrounded by 60 peaks above 3000m. Being close to the Italian boarder gives the area further
potential. Within an hours drive we can be hiking in the Dolomites. Other optional activities close to us is exploring the picturesque city of Lienz the capitol of East Tyrol or driving up
the famous Grossglockner high alpine road. The alpine pass takes you alongside Grossglockner, Austria's highest mountain. The road is 48km, it has 36 bends and an impressive assent of
2504m. Our location is also within the Hohe Tauren National Park. This national park
is by far the largest of Austrias 7 national parks as well as the largest nature reserve in the Alps.
This provides us with the perfect location to explore by foot,
ski, snowboard, bike, climbing, flying or by just sitting still and exploring by sight and
MoaAlm is situated at 1800m and was recently renovated. It's our mountain retreat and we are sure that the minute you arrive at MoaAlm it will immediately feel like your mountain getaway. It is
situated 3km above the village of Kals Am Grossglockner. To arrive at MoaAlm you drive up from the village, crossing bridges and passing farming pastures reaching the house which is surrounded by
stunning views of the mountains. In the Winter we are isolated, arriving to MoaAlm has to be by foot, by tractor or our trusted Landrover. Perfect for our adventurous guests. Due to our position
we have no light pollution, star gazing is amazing and we are constantly amazed by the nature surrounding us.
MoaAlm has room for a maximum of 12 - 15 guests as we wanted to create a large space for all our guests to enjoy. You will
stay in a room with panoramic views and en-suite private bathroom. The in-house yoga studio has a panoramic
mountain view and is the perfect place for an active start of the day with Vinyasa flow yoga or a relaxing session of restorative yoga in the afternoon. In the morning the sun rise fills the room
with energy and the late afternoon turns the mountains pink. We also have a TV room available for everyone to use. We love however that this room seems never to be occupied! Maybe the
changing scenery of the mountains are sufficient enough viewing?
After an active day in the outdoors you can enjoy the astonishing view at our sunny terrace or relax in our living room
with shared dining table. We have created a comfortable communal space that has sofas and areas that you can relax each evening.
