MoaAlm Mountain Retreat

Mountain Retreat

MoaAlm Mountain Retreat, the remote home for your Austrian holiday, stands proud at 1800m within the Hohe Tauern National Park. Situated just 3km above the small community of Kals am Grossglockner, a farming community with a strong mountaineering tradition. Nestled within the Alps of East Tyrol, MoaAlm is a stylishly renovated guest house for a maximum of 14 guests. You can enjoy the astonishing mountain views from our sunny south facing terrace, after an active day in the outdoors. We have a wood burning hot tub to relax in and savour even more of the Alpine fresh air, before enjoying dinner at our communal oak dining table.

Please make yourself at home: Relax, enjoy a drink at the bar, curl up on the sofa with a book, enjoy a meal with your new friends and immerse yourself in the beauty of MoaAlm Mountain Retreat.

We have 6 guest rooms. All are thoughtfully decorated and very spacious, with ensuite bathrooms and beautiful views. South facing rooms have balconies and views of the surrounding mountains. All rooms can be made up with a double or two single beds. Two of our bedrooms can also be available as triple rooms, which are ideal for solo travellers. Towels, bed-linen and a hairdryer are provided for your stay.

The in-house yoga studio has a large panoramic window with gorgeous views of the surrounding mountains. Start the day with a morning yoga session with our in-house yoga teacher, or maybe join a calming afternoon restorative class. The morning sunrise fills the room with soft energy, while in the late afternoon the mountains often turn a beautiful shade of pink as the light fades. We love this room, and we hope you'll enjoy it as much as we do!

North Facing Rooms

Our two north-facing rooms are smaller and cosy, a calm place to return to after a day of hiking, skiing or exploring. Looking out towards the slope behind the house, you can often spot deer moving quietly between the trees right in front of your big windows. These rooms are perfect for couples or people who already know each other, available as either double or twin rooms. They can also be booked for single occupancy as a private double room. Each room has an ensuite bathroom and everything you need for a relaxed stay.

Triple rooms

Traveling solo but happy to share? Our triple rooms are ideal for guests who enjoy the company of fellow mountain lovers while keeping accommodation costs down. Sharing a room often leads to new friendships, stories from the trail and good moments, while the house offers space to enjoy some time to yourself whenever you feel like it. The rooms are also well suited to groups of friends or small families looking to stay together. With south-facing mountain views, these spacious rooms have three single beds and an ensuite bathroom.

South-Facing Rooms

Our south-facing rooms are a favorite among our guests, offering stunning views and access to a balcony overlooking the mountains. More spacious than our north-facing rooms, they offer plenty of room to unpack, relax and feel at home. After a day outdoors, stretch out with a book, watch the changing light on the peaks, or simply enjoy a quiet moment before dinner. Each room has an ensuite bathroom and can be arranged as a double or twin room. They can be shared by couples, friends or solo travelers, or reserved for single use with a supplement.

Suppliers

The growing season is very short up here at MoaAlm as we are at 1800m, but we manage to grow a bountiful garden of fresh herbs, chard and lettuce. We have lots of fresh mint in the summer to supplement our tea obsession. We cook with organic and locally-sourced food as much as possible. Likewise, we try to get all our other supplies from nearby, independent businesses in the village of Kals. We are committed to constantly looking at ways to address our carbon footprint and we are a plant based business.

Water Supply

We have our own water supply that comes to us directly from a natural spring from the mountain side. This means that we don’t have to worry about transporting water up to MoaAlm through a pump system. It tastes incredible as it comes directly from Grossglockner Glacier and is filtered by nature! Our guests often say it’s the purest water they ever tasted.

Waste Management

We are lucky that there's a fantastic recycling service provided by our local community. At MoaAlm we make the most of this service to reduce the amount of landfill that we produce. We limit our use of single-use plastics on a day-to-day basis, using glass jars and buying ingredients and natural cleaning products in bulk. Upstairs in the guest living area we provide a mini recycling station, and we have this in every main area of the house to streamline the recycling. We have a large composting system for food waste, but in general not much food goes to waste around here… it’s too tasty!

How to Get to MoaAlm

Our nearest airports are Innsbruck, Salzburg, Klagenfurt and Munich. We recommend booking flights that arrive earlier in the day, so you can join one of our transfers and arrive at MoaAlm in time for afternoon cake. If possible, we encourage traveling by train or bus to our pick-up locations. You can plan your route via www.oebb.at/en/ and search for connections to Huben Ort or Lienz in Osttirol. From there, we offer free group transfers on Saturdays. In winter, we also arrange a shuttle from Salzburg airport on request. We're always happy to help you plan the most convenient and smooth way to travel here. Just let us know where you are coming from.

"As soon as I stepped onto the terrace at MoaAlm and took in the stunning view I felt instantly relaxed and excited for the week to come. The rooms and shared spaces were very clean and comfortable. The hiking was perfectly individualized to our group and abilities while showcasing the beautiful area. Some other highlights were the food, the yoga and the hot tub. But the best part was how welcomed and at home the hosts made us all feel."
