Skiing and snowboarding in East Tyrol

AUSTRIA WINTER

Ski and Snowboard

Most of the best skiing in Europe is within the Alps. Austria is one of the powerhouses of the ski and snowboard destinations. Resorts such as Kitzbuhel and St Anton, with their amazing Alpine histories, are easily accessible from Innsbruck airport by plentiful taxi transfers, train links and public transport. As a result they also have become a haven for the chic and glamorous snow lovers in designer jackets with their state of the art skis and ski boots. Even the snowboarders have a well dressed swagger when they carry their board to the first cable car ride of the day and then hit the hipster Apres Ski bars after a day's shredding.

If you are looking for a more modest skiing and snowboarding experience, GG Resort is a true traditional, local gem and the largest ski area in East Tyrol. With wide open pistes and mountain huts with authentic Austrian charm alongside no waiting in long lines for the chairlift then try a ski holiday based around the farming village of Kals Am Grossglockner.

Generous beginner areas, magic carpets and a family run ski school also make it the perfect learning experience. With 18 lifts with a capacity of over 23,891 people, it always seems to be easily accessible, even in the busiest times of the winter season. The piste, as you would expect from an Austrian ski resort, are always well groomed with plenty of blue, red and black runs to practice your carving. There's no snowboard park, but there are lots of natural kickers, tree runs and places to develop your off piste skills.

For the more adventurous and experienced, back-country touring opportunities are boundless in East Tirol and we are in the heart of some of the least tracked out mountain terrain. Avalanche awareness and safety skills are absolutely necessary. If in doubt always get a guide or join our specialist week dedicated to ski touring and Splitboarding.

The other advantage of the area and having MoaAlm Mountain Retreat as your holiday base, is the ease of ski rental and the quality of gear available to rent. We have a truly awesome ski hire shop in the village which provides a great service for all our guests. You can even rent backpacks for avalanche safety and your carving skies can be switched for powder skies if we have a fresh downfall of snow.

Downhill skiing in East Tyrol

For an intermediate skier and snowboarder you can even ski out from MoaAlm to the chair lift through a private field and tree lined private tracks. We can’t ski back to MoaAlm, but that doesn’t matter, as the trusted Landrover Defender, in all it’s historic 4x4 glory, will be available to drive you back up the mountain in time to relax in our wood burning hot tub.

We look forward to sharing this wonderful area with you and hope to see you on the piste! If you want to join us for a week of winter activity, our season runs from December 10th to April 15th....
