Climb Grossglockner

AUSTRIA Specialist Weeks

Climb Grossglockner…

Enjoy an ultimate mountain holiday experience! This week combines a high alpine ascent with a mountaineering course, acclimatisation by hiking and climbing tours all from our base at MoaAlm Mountain Retreat.

The highlight of the week is climbing the Grossglockner, which is situated in our own 'backyard'. With its 3797m it is the highest mountain of Austria and should be on the bucket list of every adventurer!

We also have a wonderful space to relax in, an outdoor hot tub to soak in and plentiful plant based meals to keep you energised, while you are not climbing mountains!

This holiday can be organised during the summer or winter season for a minimum of 4 participants. If you are Interested to join us as a solo traveler, couple or with a group then please email us on austria@wearactive.com

Mountaineering Course & Grossglockner Ascent

You will receive a concise alpine training given by the well known local mountain guides from Kals. You will receive an introduction to rock climbing, learn material handling techniques (rope, knot and crampon handling) and slope & ice techniques (crossing firm slopes, fall prevention and recovering, crevasse rescuing). Depending on group preferences and your alpine experience, the level of training can be adjusted to the needs and desires of the participants.

The Grossglockner ascent starts at MoaAlm or Lucknerhaus (depending on weather and group preferences). A 2 to 4 hour hike will take us to the Stüdlhütte, where we will have a break. From there we will ascent over the Ködnitzkees Glacier to practice on snow and ice. Depending on weather and group preferences we will continue towards the Adlersruh hut or turn back to Stüdlhütte to spend the night. The next morning, small groups of maximum 3 participants per guide will ascent to the summit during sunrise.

Depending on experience of participants the program can be adjusted.

Required level of fitness & experience

The Grossglockner is a challenging but reachable summit. Some basic alpine experience is recommended but not necessary. A proper fitness level is required – you should be able to climb 400 vertical meters per hour and you should be sure-footed. Also, you should not have a fear of heights due to the exposed character of the Grossglockner.
